The elementary ESL program in Highland Park mainly serves students who have recently arrived in Highland Park from another country. The goal of the program is to help students acquire the English they need to become successful in the mainstream classroom as quickly as possible. Most students receive services in the form of daily 'pull-outs' by a certified ESL teacher. Some students receive 'push-in' classes by a certified ESL teacher. All English Language Learners (ELLs) are tested before entering the ESL program. Later some are tested with the state standardized Language Arts test. All are tested with the state standardized Math test and the state standardized ESL test, and then finally with the district ESL test. The average length of time an ELL needs to be in the ESL program at the elementary level is two years. Many of the students only stay in the district for under two years.
