Christine Chen Editor-in-Chief Class of 2023

Readers of The Fling

Hi, it's Christine, the editor-in-chief of The Fling. It has been my honor to hold this position and deliver our first full year of printed issues since the COVID-19 pandemic. Being the editor-in-chief has taught me not only how to use Adobe InDesign but how to be a better writer, detective, and leader. It has broadened my curiosity about the world and allowed me to investigate the world from many points of view. This year, we fully transitioned to printed issues from the online editions of the COVID-19 era, and as a result, the whole school read the paper. We covered the Stop & Shop closing, the (supposed?) closing of Highland Pizza, and the lack of trainers on the Highland Park girls’ soccer team. We even began our beloved confessions column for HPHS students to express their deepest opinions.

The production of this newspaper wouldn’t have been possible without the effort and care of many people. Mr. Gold and Ms. Soler, the advisors who always put so much care and push for the paper to be done on time and well. To Kai, the managing editor and my right-hand man, The Fling would not have been able to be what it is without you. Lastly, to all the writers and photographers, there wouldn’t have been a newspaper without you, and seeing the growth everyone had makes me proud to leave the paper in good hands. Thank you for all of you. I am eternally grateful.

I am so immensely proud of our team, and I have treasured our time together, from handing out papers in center hall to coming up with story ideas. I trust that the paper will grow to be better and better, and I am so happy that I got to be part of the journey.

Signing off,

Christine Chen
