Highland Park High School’s music department will perform its winter concert on December 21 from 7 PM to 9 PM in the auditorium. These biannual performances draw audience members from all over town. From students supporting their friends on stage to families cheering on their children, the room buzzes with excitement.

However, most concertgoers aren’t aware of what happens behind the scenes. The choir, band, and orchestra rehearse every day during A period, with additional rehearsals during some lunch periods. According to Mx. Perez, the orchestra director, and Mr. Presty, the band director, the music department focuses on playing with good tempo and intonation as a group. As Mx. Perez notes, “The students work hard every day to reach their goals. Performing, for me, is just icing on the cake. The most fun is the rehearsal time leading up to the concert.”

The community can support the musicians by attending their concerts. Mx. Perez emphasizes the importance of organizing these events that value the students’ work. “It is a special occasional event when the community can gather in one space and appreciate an art form. That is a gift that is unique to the human race.” They commend their students’ dedication and hard work throughout the year. Additionally, Mr. Presty highlights the role of time in the rehearsal and performance process. “Time [is] the most important. Time for students to practice and participate, as well as time for those to come listen to them create music.”

On the day of the concert, Mr. Presty hopes that “the audience takes away a feeling of the holiday season.” Violinist Eneya Khalil adds, “You can literally feel the music, not just hear it. I promise it touches your soul.” Whether you are a long-time concertgoer or have never seen a violin before, the winter concert and other music department events provide an opportunity to grow your appreciation for the performing arts.
