‘Tis the season for winter sports! Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are locking in for an exciting journey on the court.
This season, the boys will compete in the Gold Division, playing against South Amboy, Dunellen, and Calvary Christian once again. Regarding the conclusion of last year’s season, Coach Kam Little acknowledged, “In the state playoffs, we had a disappointing performance. To combat this from happening, we’ve added some games that should give us some competitive edge.” Markos Hantsoulis, a key player on the team, reinforces the coach’s hope for a promising comeback this year, especially given the impressive 17 wins and 8 losses of the 2022-2023 season.
Markos describes his team as a passionate and courageous group of players who sustain close bonds on and off the court. He emphasizes, “We play well together because we have good chemistry.” As anticipation rises with the first week of games, the Highland Park High School boys’ basketball team confirms its unity and steady mindset going into the season.
The girls’ basketball team is also preparing for their return to the court as the crisp winter air settles in. The team holds exceptional potential given their successes in the Blue Division last winter. The players boasted a 6-game win streak, a notable win against the Spotswood varsity team, and a final record of 16 wins and 11 losses.
After speaking with the team’s point guard, Shahed Ahmed, it’s clear that the commitment she and the other players have to the team speaks for itself. Ahmed affirms, “We have a really dedicated team. We all contribute and are always there for each other." With this encouraging spirit and driven attitude, the court is set for a season of teamwork and success.
